Recently we hired new batch of fresh graduates as internees with collaboration of PSEB. Although all of them are intelligent with good potential but it was surprising to see lack of career counseling in our educational institutes. Most of candidates coming up for interviews cannot answer interviewer’s favorite question “Where you see yourself after five years?”.
We felt an imperative need to educate our young minds not just about basics of technology but also how to plan their careers, skills they need to develop and how to choose their direction. There are so many options available in web development alone like open source developer, custom web developer, web application developer, commercial development, GUI developer, SEO expert to name few.
In addition to technical skills, fresh graduates must develop their soft skills to be successful in life as good professional. Soft skills like good ethics, honesty, dedication and respect to seniors and colleagues will gain them more acceptances and will help them getting on top positions quickly.
In a discussion recently with same batch of trainees I asked them to list qualities they think which make a good professional and we summarized that ethics are most important. As person with good ethics will be honest, dedicated and hard working. A good professional always keep work on his/her top most priority. Being good technically is important but success in professional life comes with a combination of both hard and soft skills.
We are representing our institute, our family and most importantly our country while working in a company. It is thus our duty to represent them with dignity and become role model for others.
